We all want to eat healthier. And it’s hard to change our old ways of doing things. But a healthy diet does more than help our bodies – it’s also good for our teeth and gums.
So take a minute to look at your diet. Really look at it. If sweets are your guilty pleasure, consider eating fruit instead. Cookies, candy and cakes have fat and sugar in them. Sugar combines with the bacteria in your mouth to make acids. Acids eat away at the enamel of your teeth, causing cavities. Sticky snacks are even worse because they linger on your teeth, bathing them in sugar.
Candy isn’t just the problem. Starchy foods like tacos and chips also have sugar in them. So what should you eat?
- Raw vegetables and fresh fruits.
- Whole grain bread and crackers.
- Low-fat milk and other dairy products.
- Nuts, seeds and lean meats.
