It’s common knowledge that regular exercise is a key component to a healthy lifestyle. Here’s another reason to sweat – your smile. A study of more than 12,000 participants observed the effects of exercise on dental health. Those who exercised consistently had healthier gums and fresher breath, compared to those didn’t exercise.
You know by now that you should exercise, but it doesn’t always seem like an easy thing to fit into your schedule. If you find the typical gym regimen boring, don’t do things you dread. Try a workout replacement instead!
Here are 3 ways to pump yourself (and your interest level) up that you can do outside of the gym!
1. Kill 2 “chores” with 1 stone.
Many view a daily workout as a chore. Why not turn 2 tasks into one? Go for the housework burn! The more effort you put into cleaning, the more calories you’ll burn. One easy strategy is to alternate your housework between levels. For example, vacuum the basement carpet, and then make the bed upstairs. The constant stair climbing will ensure a spick and span sweat session. See how many calories your regular household chores will burn.
2. Bring out the kid in yourself.
Exercise doesn’t have to feel like a workout. Have fun while still burning calories by bringing back some fun activities from your childhood. Break out the hula hoop or jump rope and have a competition with your kids, significant other, or a friend. Try a weighted hula hoop to tone your thighs, abs, glutes and arms to burn 200 calories in 30 minutes. Other ideas include a fun game of Frisbee or football, or invest in a mini-trampoline – you’ll get in some great workouts and your kids will love you for it!
3. Unplug and recharge.
Get off the couch and leave the iPhone in the house! Take advantage of the spring weather and get ready for summer with some fun activities outdoors, like gardening, yard work, playing with the kids, taking the dog for a walk, or going on a nature hike. Have access to a pool? Try going for a swim and burn more than 200 calories in just 30 minutes and tone and strengthen your muscles at the same time. Incorporate healthier activities in your daily workday routine, as well, such as biking to work or going for a walk during your lunch break. Try to unplug and spend some time outside each day and reap the benefits, including lower stress levels, a healthier body, and even a healthier mouth.
