Back to School: How to Handle Tooth Trauma

August 27, 2013 By Delta Dental of Virginia

Dental emergencies can happen anytime but the chances are higher now that your kids are back in school. Tooth trauma at school is a common problem and dealing with them in a suitable manner is important.

Common tooth emergencies and how to deal with them:

  • The child may have a sudden toothache while in school. Toothache is usually associated with cavities and gum problems. This kind of ache can be very severe and cause trauma to the child. Washing the mouth with saline water can bring temporary relief. An over-the-counter painkiller will help to reduce the pain and inflammation, if any. Topical benzocaine medicines provide relief when rubbed on the gums. If the cheek swells up from a toothache, then a cold compress from outside will help to bring down the swelling. A visit to the dentist at the earliest convenience is recommended.
  • Knocking out or chipping of tooth is also a common cause of dental trauma. If this happens to a primary tooth, there can be heavy bleeding. Applying pressure on the area will help to stem the flow of blood. In case a permanent tooth is knocked out, place the tooth in cold water or back in the socket and go to the dental emergency immediately. If it is treated immediately, the tooth may be saved.
  • If a tooth is broken, rinsing with water will help to remove blood. Using cold compresses can reduce any swelling. A chipped piece can be preserved and taken along to the dentist for possible replacement.
  • Biting the tongue or lip is another common trauma, which can happen during activities and sports. If this happens, wash the mouth with cold water and apply a cold compress to reduce bleeding and swelling. Visit the emergency room if the injury is severe.

Some tips to prevent common dental injuries in school

Most dentists recommend a mouthguard while playing any kind of sport. They provide specific protection to the mouth area and prevent serious injuries. Learn more about the different kinds of mouthguards.

The morning rush can cause falls and dental injuries. Wake up a little early to begin the day in a relaxed manner. Have the dental emergency number handy.
