Tooth-Friendly Treats: How to Make a Fresh Watermelon Cake

July 24, 2026 By Delta Dental of Virginia

Child looking at a delicious watermelon cake.

Have you tried a watermelon cake? If not, there’s no better time than now!

Watermelon cake is a refreshing, crowd-pleasing centerpiece for any summer celebration, whether it’s a birthday, backyard barbecue, or picnic in the sun.

Naturally sweet, juicy, and bursting with flavor, a watermelon cake delivers all the fun of dessert without the added sugar. Packed with hydration and easier on the teeth, this treat is as nourishing as it is delicious.

Why choose a fresh watermelon cake?

Aside from simply being delicious, fresh watermelon cake is full of oral health benefits.

Watermelon is more than 90 percent water, making it a great way to stay hydrated, which can also help combat dry mouth. A study in the Journal of Clinical Medicine recommends that individuals experiencing dry mouth eat fruits with high water content, such as watermelon, to help alleviate uncomfortable symptoms.

Additionally, watermelon has a lower acidity than many other fruits, making it gentler on and safer for tooth enamel. Enamel is the hard, outer layer of your tooth that protects the sensitive layers inside. Highly acidic foods and drinks can wear away enamel, leaving teeth more vulnerable to sensitivity and decay.

How to make a fresh watermelon cake

Making a watermelon cake is incredibly simple and only requires a couple of ingredients:

  • 1 large seedless watermelon (Look for a watermelon that is free of bruises and dents and has a yellow spot for the best flavor)
  • 1 bag of sugar-free white chocolate or regular chocolate chips
  • 2 tsp coconut or vegetable oil
  • (Optional) Mix of additional fruits such as grapes, kiwis, blueberries, etc.
  • (Optional) Sugar-free sprinkles
  • (Optional) Sugar-free whipped cream topping

Instructions:

Prepare the watermelon

  1. Carefully slice off both ends of the watermelon, creating a flat bottom on each side.
  2. Stand it upright and carefully cut away the rind.
  3. Shape it into a round “cake” (If you want a layered watermelon cake, slice the large cylinder into two pieces.)
  4. Pat the outside dry with paper towels (this helps toppings stick.)

Melt the sugar-free topping

  1. Place the sugar-free white chocolate or regular chocolate chips and your choice of oil in a microwave-safe bowl.
  2. Microwave in 20–30 second intervals, stirring each time.
  3. Stop once smooth and fully melted (don’t overheat).

Assemble the watermelon cake

  1. For a cleaner look, drizzle the topping over the cake, letting it drip down the sides.
  2. For a classic look, quickly spread a thin layer of the topping around the outside and on top.
  3. Add additional desired toppings on top of the watermelon cake immediately.

Chill and serve

  1. Chill the watermelon cake for at least 20 minutes to set the toppings.
  2. Cut like a normal cake, serve, and enjoy!
